A man who stabbed, beheaded and cannibalized a stranger on a Greyhound bus in Canada in 2008 was found not criminally responsible by a judge. He was committed to a mental institution and in 2017 was granted absolute discharge, becoming a free man. He has no legal obligations or restrictions. The judge ruled that he was not responsible for his actions because he was suffering from untreated schizophrenia. Presumably he’s on medication, so the question is, what happens if he goes off his meds? There’s something terribly wrong with the justice system in Western countries.
