Fun Fact Friday: Before Joe Schartz was the state champion coach at Manhattan and the 2022 Sports in Kansas all classes coach of the year, he was a standout football player at Washburn from 1993-1996. The Dodge City HS standout finished his Ichabod career as the all-time leader in passing yards at WU with 5,527 yards and his 6,622 yards in total offense was also a school record for a career at the time he graduated. Schartz is now one of the best 6A football coaches in Kansas and is 141-32 entering year 17 with Manhattan HS. #sportsinkansas

Manhattan High enters the 2025 season once again as one of the premier programs in 6A football under longtime head coach Joe Schartz, who is entering his 17th season with the Indians. Schartz has built an elite program with a 141-32 record at MHS and a decade-long playoff streak that includes a 2022 state championship and a runner-up finish in 2024. Last season, Manhattan went 12-1 and claimed the Centennial League title, marking their most recent league championship and extending a streak of winning seasons dating back to 2008. The Indians will have a QB spot to fill after multiple-time SIK All-State QB pick Carter Aslin has graduated. Defensively, Manhattan brings back a loaded secondary featuring JJ Dunnigan, a 4 star ATH heading to Kansas University after his senior season. With a strong senior class, Manhattan has its sights set on returning to the state title game this fall. #sportsinkansas
