Meet @forestservice Ecologist Sjana Schanning and hear about working remotely -- very remotely -- for 20 years. In her off time, Schanning paddled 1,500 miles along the perimeter of Lake Superior to reconnect with nature. go.usa.gov/x76yf #USDA_FIA

We found this rarely seen but abundant tiny mammal during the LBL Bio Blitz. Short-tailed Shrews forage under leaf litter for insects, snails, mice, and even snakes! These social guys hunt using echolocation and venom. Their venom can be painful, but not harmful to humans.

For wild and domesticated bees, pollen is the sole source of their protein. In N. America and Europe, little pollen is available during winter. Plants like Goldenrod that serve as late-season pollen sources are especially important for winter survival. Photo: USGS
