Another interesting unit from the Rhodesian Bush War - Grey's Scouts. This was a battalion-sized mounted infantry unit. Yes, actual horses still being used in the 1970's. They were actually very useful for long range patrols in the African bush, including when accompanying armoured cars. They didn't do cavalry charges but dismounted to fight on foot. For a nation suffering severe fuel shortages due to international sanctions, this was a logistically efficient, all-terrain alternative to mechanised infantry or recon vehicles.
