Big news for the indie music world. UMG just bought Downtown Music for $775M. Downtown houses some of the most vital tools & services available to the independent music sector: CD Baby→ Distribution for 2m artists FUGA→ Infra for top indie labels & services Songtrust→ Pub admin for 445k songwriters Curve→ Royalty services for 1,500 indie labels UMG now owns this ecosystem—giving them control over distribution, publishing & label services that power countless independents. Every year, indies gain market share. Majors fight back the only way they know how: consolidation. Sony bought AWAL for $420M UMG just bought indie stalwart PIAS. Now Downtown. I guess if you can’t beat the indies, buy them.

gamma, Larry Jackson's $1B+ backed company, made a big pitch to investors about the opportunity in music.
Many catalog deals have been for artists from the 70s and 80s. Jackson's pitch is that "shallow catalog" from the 2010s, and 2000s and 90s, is overlooked.
gamma is a bet on frontline music from artists like Sexyy Red and 4batz, but also new releases from Usher, Rick Ross. Investors in gamma include Apple, Eldridge Industries, Alpha Wave Global, and A24.
