BBQ RULES: We are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity . When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: (1) The woman buys the food. Ensuring she is educated in the correct cuts of steak to purchase. (2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. (4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman. Here comes the important part: (5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. (6) The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery. (7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat Important again: (8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. (9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table. (10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes And most important of all: (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. (12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ' her night off ', and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women. 🤣🤣

The nurse looked down at her clipboard and then back at me, her voice brisk and unmoving. “Ma’am, hospital policy is very clear. If a responsible adult isn’t here to sign you out in the next ten minutes, we’ll have to cancel the procedure.” I sat stiffly on the edge of the vinyl chair in the pre-op waiting room. The fluorescent lights hummed above me, loud in the silence. I had waited months for this cataract surgery, but what made my chest feel tight wasn’t the thought of losing the appointment. It was the loneliness. Eight weeks earlier, I had sent the date to the family group chat. Just a simple message: “Surgery on the 15th. Eye procedure. Need someone to drive me home afterward. Love you all.” The responses trickled in over the next few days. “Mom, that’s the week of a major presentation.” “The kids have competitions—we can’t miss them.” “I tried to get off work, but they won’t approve it. Sorry.” I told them it was alright. I said I would manage. But now, at sixty-eight, I found my hands shaking as I scrolled through my contacts one last time. My thumb paused over Ethan’s name. He was thirty, lived in 2C down the hall. Quiet. Polite. Kept mostly to himself. His mother had passed away from cancer a couple of years earlier; sometimes I’d hear him moving around late at night, unable to sleep. We’d only ever exchanged hallway pleasantries—nothing more than comments about the weather or packages left at the wrong door. Still, I typed. “Hi Ethan, this is Lillian from 2A. I’m at the surgical center, and they won’t release me without someone to sign me out. I don’t have anyone coming. If you’re available, I’d be very grateful. I’m sorry to ask.” The three little dots appeared almost instantly. “I’m coming. Send me the address. Don’t let them cancel.” Seventeen minutes later, he hurried through the doors, still wearing his work uniform, slightly out of breath, hair damp from rushing. He didn’t ask questions. He simply walked to the desk, signed what they handed him, and then sat beside me. When they called my name, he gave my hand a quick, steady squeeze. “I’ll be here when you wake up,” he said. And he was. After the procedure, he stayed while the nurse explained medications, instructions, and follow-up care. He drove me to the pharmacy, waited for the prescription, then brought me home. Inside my small apartment, he arranged pillows so I could rest exactly the way the doctor required. He made tea, somehow finding the box I keep tucked away on the second shelf, and placed the cup within easy reach. I felt embarrassed by how much he was doing. “You’ve already given up your whole afternoon,” I said. “I’m so sorry.” He stopped what he was doing and looked at me, his expression softening. “Lillian,” he said quietly, “I would give anything to spend one more afternoon taking my mom to an appointment. Sitting in a waiting room. Filling out forms. Bringing her home and making her tea. Helping you today… that’s the closest I’ve felt to having that again.” I didn’t know what to say. That evening, my phone buzzed with messages. “How did it go, Mom?” “Hope everything’s okay!” “Love you—sorry we couldn’t be there.” No calls. No visits. No one asked if I needed help. The next morning, at exactly 7:42, there was a gentle knock. Ethan stood there holding two coffees and a small paper bag from the bakery. He checked to make sure I was using the eye drops correctly, asked how I was feeling, then sat and chatted about ordinary things—sports scores, a new neighbor moving in, the line at the coffee shop—until the apartment didn’t feel quite so quiet. I used to believe family meant the people you raised, the ones you devoted your life to. Now I understand something different. Family is the person who shows up. The one who doesn’t hesitate. The one who understands loss—and chooses not to let someone else feel it alone. So if you’re reading this, call your parents. Take them to the appointment. Sit beside them.

@mikegallacher1 Are you in a ward by yourself or with others? Having company might help? I had a hip op in 2014 and shared a room. It was nice to have someone to talk to. Sending my best wishes ❤️‍🩹

I am convinced there’s something wrong with my brain. I’ve spent the last six nights with my head in the exact spot. This is due to leg damage. I’m now struggling with the fact my brain no longer needs me. Send help
