Today, South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day, remembering the tragic events of the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960. This day is a reminder of the courage and sacrifice that shaped the nation’s journey toward justice, equality, and human dignity.

Lithuania’s fintech sector is growing, attracting fast-scaling payment tech companies. PAYSTRAX, headquartered in Vilnius with an office in Klaipėda, is expanding teams in IT, finance, marketing, operations, and account management.

Lithuania has lodged a protest note to Russia over continued attacks against #Ukraine, targeting its civilians and critical infrastructure. Lithuania also stands in solidarity with #Moldova over its airspace violation and environmental threat caused by Russia.

Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, a writer, playwright and teacher, also saved Jews. It was in her house that the rescued found shelter. The wife of the renowned Lithuanian composer and artist, M. K. Čiurlionis, was awarded with the title of Righteous Among the Nations in 1991.

🇱🇹 36 years of independence, and Lithuania is becoming the Baltic economy to watch. GDP per capita reached 87% of the EU average, startups are worth €16B (39× growth), and foreign investment rose to €42.9B – about 52% of GDP (~€14,800 per person), up 9% from last year.

🇱🇹 Lithuania steps onto the global tourism investment map. The UN World Tourism Organization has unveiled the first-ever Lithuanian Tourism Investment Guide, highlighting sustainability and innovation. Tourism already accounts for 2.7% of GDP, with a target of 4.5% by 2030.

Nature-first travel is growing in 2026, with searches for “greenest city in the world” up 9,900%. Vilnius ranks 2nd globally in the new Green City Index, with 61% green space, high air quality, and 1,500 km of trails, proudly living up to its European Green Capital 2025 title.

🇱🇹 Lithuanian edtech company EditAI has been named a WSA 2025 Winner by the UN-supported World Summit Awards. Selected among 40 global winners (from 400+ entries) in Learning & Education for reducing teacher workload and boosting student engagement.

Kaunas University of Technology is creating a Centre of Excellence for AI for Sustainable Living and Working. With partners in Finland and Germany, it is set to adopt Europe’s most advanced AI practices, strengthening research, and integrating into leading European AI ecosystems.

Special congratulations to the “Narsuoliai” team, whose 13 members became the first Lithuanians to summit Mafadi (3446 m), the highest peak in South Africa. 🇱🇹🇿🇦⛰️

Together with the Lithuanian community in South Africa, we celebrated the Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence – a reminder that freedom is never given, it is a daily choice.

This year, South Africa’s constitution turns 30. It captures the shared values that drive the partnership between South Africa and the European Union. We join in celebrating South Africa’s transition to democracy, equality and dignity.

March 15 is the Day of the Rescuers of Lithuanian Jews. It was not chosen by chance. #OTD, in 1966, Ona Šimaitė, a librarian, was the first Lithuanian to be titled as Righteous Among the Nations. Saving more than 100 lives, she shed light on one of the darkest periods of history.

On 11 March 1990, Lithuania restored its Independence. Despite Soviet aggression, propaganda and an economic blockade, we persisted with courage, truth and unity. That choice still defines us. 🇱🇹

Today, we celebrate our freedom. Amid the darkness of the Soviet rule, March 11, 1990, came as a ray of light and hope. We have always believed in our independence and resilience, and we always will.
