Florida’s Orange County school district banned cell phones for the entire school day, even during breaks. So kids can’t use them during class and they can't use them during breaks. They have to keep phones in the backpacks at all times. There’s a "We see it, we take it" policy. "And on the first day, more than 100 phones were confiscated from students. In the following days, confiscations dropped dramatically. This school district has seen a drop in bullying and a rise in student engagement. Teachers report that there has been "newfound life" injected into the classroom. Students are more talkative and more collaborative." Using sliders like this one can be useful when modelling multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 to demonstrate that all the digits move the same amount of place value columns, to show how the value of each digit changes and to examine the purpose of a place holder.
