Think this was the Charles Barkley “Gordon Hayward isn’t walking through that door” game😉 Dawgs walked away with the nation’s longest win streak (12) and forced 8 TO’s in the 1st half—WI led the nation in 7.5 TO’s per game🤯 #GoDawgs

15 years ago today (3/24/11) 8-seed Butler upsets 4-seed Wisconsin, 61-54, to advance to the Elite 8 of the 2011 NCAA Tournament! Matt Howard led the Dawgs w/ a double double (20 points, 12 rebounds) Shelvin Mack & Shawn Vanzant added 13 & 10 points, respectively #DawgsOnly

@dannykanell Coach FM makes a great point about how critical this makes preseason rankings. Only the Power 4/5 want the 10th place conference team over another quality “mid-major” but they masterfully shifted things in that direction.

Before Butler and a 14-year NBA career, Gordon Hayward led Brownsburg to a state championship. He was honored Thursday night with a jersey retirement ceremony. 'It’s just really special.' bit.ly/4bFFfFl

A Butler legend. An NBA veteran. Our Executive Basketball Advisor. Welcome back, @gordonhayward 🐶 “There were a lot of people who were instrumental in my development on and off the court during my time at Butler, and I’m excited to give back to the program by helping today’s Bulldogs in a similar way...” 🔗 bit.ly/47aHxZb #ButlerWay

@VinzClortho22 For sure. My default is to side with the players. It’s just the collateral damage of the changes that is unfortunate.

@MHoward54 Flip side, though, is portal makes it easier for guys to get out of situations that just aren't working. I'm happy for guys like Tamar Bates and Kaleb Banks finding better fits and success.

There are 3 top players (and coach) from Florida Atlantic’s Final 4 run 2 years ago on 3 different Sweet 16 (Power 5) teams this year. Perfect representation of what has taken the madness out of the Big Dance.
College Sports Only@CSOonX

It's crazy that unless New Mexico beats Michigan State, every single team in the Sweet 16 will be from a Power 4 conference. Maybe it's just a one-off, but it's concerning that the new model of turning mid-majors into farm teams could take a lot of the madness out of March. #MarchMadness

@TheBigBenDiesel Yeah what draws me in is seeing the team no one cared about all year making a run and executing game plans against the big guys. I get some fans like seeing the most talented plays square off but that isn’t what gives the event its mystique and allure

@GSavetheplanet The deck is stacked against them from the start with how they determine quad 1 wins and NET rankings

@MHoward54 Yes Matt and these large mega conferences scoop up all the at-large bids. Deserving teams like George Mason, Bradley, Chattanooga get left out. No way Texas, Oklahoma and UNC deserved a bid.

@MHoward54 What Butler did in 2010 and 2011 will never happen again. This tournament is over as we once knew it. The talent disparity in Round 1 was stunning. At one point I counted 17 double digit victories.

@andylutz3 Great question. Would have been very hard to turn down what’s being offered out there today. I bet you can count on one hand the fresh/soph all-league players at mid major schools that come back for another year

@MHoward54 Do you think you would have stayed at Butler if the NIL money and Transfer Portal would have been there?

@VinzClortho22 In 2007 I was an incoming freshman for a mid-major that just made the Sweet 16. The coach left for a Power 5 and no one went with him. But you’re right that today there is little chance they stay. There is little incentive and so they don’t stay, understandably.

@MHoward54 I agree with the concept in general but this specific FAU example doesn't really prove it. Players always transfer when the coach leaves. This was true before modern portal/NIL. One even followed the coach.
