Notably, 15/17 patients had high urinary mercury levels, and all 6 CAM formulations that were tested had unacceptably high levels of mercury.

Of the 28 patients studied, the most common biopsy finding was NELL-1 membranous nephropathy, followed by minimal change disease. Most patients had spontaneous remissions with expectant management and RAS blockade. Some patients required a short course of steroids.

Today the Institute, and the Nephrology community, mourn the loss of a giant in the field, to whom we owe so much. May his memory always be a blessing, and may his soul rest in peace.

He has remained a familiar face to the alumni even after his retirement, taking great pleasure in attending every Nephsil meet whenever he could, despite his declining health in his later years.

Establishing a comprehensive department with a full complement of staff, half a century ago, was no ordinary feat. Under his leadership, Ward 46 and Ward 46A took shape to become the stomping grounds where a generation of Nephrologists were tutored and trained.

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Prof. M. A. Amaresan, the founder of this Institute of Nephrology. He served as the Head of the Department between 1972 and 1986, shepherding the fledgling Nephrology unit for more than a decade.

Rest in Peace Prof 𝐌.𝐒.𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐧, Prof Of Nephrology, formerly Head of Dept at @MMCNephro. The First Department of Nephrology was started in December 1971 at the Govt General Hospital and the Premier Institute of Madras Medical College by Prof. 𝐌.𝐒.𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐧 after qualifying as the First Nephrologist in Tamil Nadu Medical Service. The PGIMER Chandigarh started a DM course in nephrology in 1969 and the first batch passed out in 1971. Dr KS Chugh’s first student at PGIMER was Dr 𝐌.𝐒.𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐧 from Tamil Nadu. The Southern Chapter of the Indian Society of Nephrology was formed in 1979 during a meeting held at the Seminar Hall of Madras Medical College. The Chapter was formed by the efforts of Professor 𝐌.𝐒.𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐧 and members of the four Southern states, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. (Pic courtesy @sundar_s1955)
