If you pitched this as a screenplay, every studio would reject it for being too on-the-nose. Fernando Mendoza was a 2-star recruit ranked 2,149th in his high school class. Zero FBS scholarship offers. Not one. He walked on at Cal, fought for a starting job, transferred to Indiana for his senior year, then led them to 16-0 and the first national title in school history. Heisman, Walter Camp, Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Manning, Big Ten MVP. 41 TDs, 72% completion, 8-to-0 TD-to-INT ratio in the playoffs. The Raiders took him #1 overall Thursday night. $54.56M fully guaranteed. Only the third player ever to win the Heisman, win a national championship, and go first overall the next spring. Burrow. Newton. Mendoza. Then he skipped Pittsburgh. The biggest stage in football, the moment every kid imagines from the second they pick up a ball, and Fernando watched the call from his living room in Florida because his mom Elsa is in a wheelchair and the travel is hard for her. She was diagnosed with MS when he was 4. She wrote a letter to her sons in The Players Tribune in 2015 promising the disease "won't affect us in the ways that matter." The part nobody talks about: while every other top pick was on stage, Fernando announced the Mendoza Family Fund the same day. $500K personal donation to the National MS Society. Committed to raising $1M over three years. He hasn't taken an NFL snap and he's already given more to a cause than most players donate in a full career. He and his brother Alberto have already raised $360K through the Mendoza Bros. Burger at BuffaLouie's in Bloomington. At Christmas, he handed four families dealing with MS $10,000 each for an Adidas shopping spree. Both his parents are children of Cuban refugees who fled Castro. His dad rowed at Brown, won a Junior World Championship in 1987, and played high school football in Miami next to a teammate named Mario Cristobal. Fernando beat his dad's old teammate in the national championship game in January. Every athlete talks about playing for their family. Fernando actually did it.

Fernando Mendoza stayed home with his mom to celebrate being selected first overall in the NFL Draft instead of attending the in-person celebration She has multiple sclerosis, causing her to be in a wheelchair. This is what matters. Not trophies—family.

Bro, keep our name out your damn mouth. #USF will win a natty. You never will. BTW, if you didn't make such bad decisions in the Memphis and Navy games, you would've had the chance to compete for one. #GoBulls🤘🏻 usatoday.com/story/sports/n…

#USF CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins not-so-subtly returning fire after former head coach Alex Golesh (famously couldn’t beat teams with winning records) says #USF would never win a national championship.

Bulls Nation, we can compete for and win national championships here! It all starts with believing it’s possible and having the right coaches, focus, vision & culture! 💯⛽️! 🚫🚗🛑!!!

So, he lied to my face. Right after he was hired he did a meet and greet with season ticket holders. He told my wife, son, and myself he was here to win a championship and national title and said he felt USF had a real opportunity to do that. He said that to everyone. The guy is a used car salesman and will say anything to anyone. Auburn will learn soon enough.

This is absurd… It’s time USF makes an immediate hard push to open up a law school so we can send USF Law alumni to Tallahassee to represent our interests USF Lakeland —> Florida Polytechnic University USF Ft. Myers —> Florida Gulf Coast University USF Sarasota-Manatee - Next

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ push to give the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus to New College of Florida is a “red flag for all of us,” University of South Florida president Moez Limayem said. Read more: wusf.org/education/2026…

Happy Friday, Tbone Nation. There is a lot going on behind the scenes in the world of conference realignment right now. Unsure what is driving the uptick right now specifically. I will certainly share what I can. Like all of you, I am beyond ready for USF to make the jump. I am very confident that if this uptick proves correct then USF is positioned very well and we will be very happy with the results. As I have said for a long time now, USF has big things coming!

@USFBullsTboned Not to mention the money I spent to send my daughter to USF and then I went back to USF for my Masters! I realize the money didn’t go to athletics but it is a lot of 💰. Instead if you write a 1 time check and jump on the bandwagon for 1 year you would hold priority over us.

I am a 19 year season ticket holder and I agree with you. Something should be done for the long time members. We were there through the good and the long bad years. I dont want gifts or on field recognition. Player access. Access to spring and fall camps. Better on field access. Something extra for those who are at 10, 15, 20 years etc.

Well stated, Darrien! It is a conversation my wife and I had had many times over the years as we raise our kids and balance our budget as a family. I argue that the % of our budget being spent on our season tickets in multiple sports, gear, swag, decorations, tail gating, travel and more is much higher than the % of budget for the large donors. Therefore, small donors risk more than major donors as a % of their budget. One day I hope I am blessed enough to be a large donor. But the ROI over the last 10 years has really decreased. Fan fests scrapped. Field access diminished. Meet and greets limited. These were things that gave tremendous value to season ticket holders. Meeting and interacting with the student athletes who benefit from our donations made it feel like our money mattered. You cared more about the games. You felt more passionate. There is a disconnect today. And with less quality opponents, high coach and player turnover, higher costs for the same tickets year over year, and less fan involvement I predict a breaking point is being reached. School pride can only go so far. Hopefully, with our new CEO of Athletics, @RHiggins_USF and his team will listen and make the fan experience greater. Revive the fan fests. Give more exclusive access to ALL season ticket holders. Perhaps if athletes and coaches felt more connected to the fan base perhaps they will feel more loyalty to stay. Loyalty is a two way street.

My latest Substack article focuses on donors across the American who give less than $5K a year. Many still give out of pride, but some are starting to question the relationship with the programs they support. I wrote about that tension and what administrators can do about it.
