Immigration used to be a working-class issue. Workers saw it as competition for jobs, housing, hospital beds, and every other government benefit. Milton Friedman said it plainly: you cannot have open immigration and a welfare state. The welfare state turns into a magnet, pulling more people into a government system where the pie is fixed. Every new claimant takes from someone who was already there. Either benefits get cut, or taxes go up, and the working class always pays. That’s why the political class now scapegoats the rich.
