Alyssa’s bedroom—shown in the Oscar-winning documentary All the Empty Rooms—still holds the small details of a life in motion: an open soccer bag, an unused mask, toothpaste left uncapped, an unmade bed waiting for her to come home. It's been eight years since we lost our #8, Alyssa Alhadeff. Alyssa played with heart, lived with purpose, and led with kindness. On the soccer field, she was #8: a whirlwind of energy and grit. Off the field, she was a flurry of sparkles, dancing, and laughter. Alyssa was a fourteen-year-old Freshman with big dreams when her life was cut far too short. On 2-14 my beautiful daughter Alyssa went to school and never came home. She was 14 years old. She loved soccer. She loved music. She loved her friends. She had her whole life ahead of her. On Valentine’s Day, while other families were celebrating love, our world shattered inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Seventeen lives were stolen. Seventeen families were forever changed. Alyssa’s last moments should never have happened. No child should have to text goodbye from a classroom. No parent should have to learn their child’s fate from the news. February 14 is not just a date on a calendar for us. It is the day innocence was taken. It is the day I became a mother fighting for school safety. I share her story because Alyssa mattered.
