The magic spell in Twin Peaks which defines the series reminds me of Norse pagan practices. It goes: “Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see, one chants out between two worlds, fire walk with me!” The spell is connected to the "red lodge" in which agent Cooper is able to convene with the dead and with supernatural entities - it is a liminal space like a waiting room. Compare it to Hervararkviða in which Hervǫr summons her dead father from his grave in a ritual during which it is said: Hnigin er helgrind, haugar opnast "The Gate of the World of Death is lowered, barrows open," Then Hervǫr finds herself: Heima í millum "between the worlds". David Lynch specifically states that his ideas come to him from a realm he calls the "unified field" - whatever he thinks this realm is, it is clearly the same place that our ancestors, skilled in necromancy, went to convene with the dead. They chanted out (galdr) between two worlds.
