@Pieters_Tweet @MatteoCarandini In addition to more precise feedback, if cells in higher visual areas sample from uniformly sized regions of V1 then they should inherit smaller cellular RFs in the foceal zone, leading to higher resolution vision. Something we're currently investigating.

@MatteoCarandini But why then? We have to speculate, but one possibility is that this visual field region has a special role for catching prey, e.g. insects. The higher precision could imply a visuo-motor loop that is well tuned and can compensate for smaller differences in prey position.

We published a preprint of our study that demonstrates that mice have a special, fovea-like representation in their visual cortex. This region may be important for some mouse behaviors, such as insect hunting. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
