Twenty four percent of all active missing persons reports as of December 31, 2025 were of those under age 18, according to National Crime Information Center. Most are found safe. Then there are the ones who aren't. #truecrime #coldcase

@opptruecrime The case started in earnest after body two and three, not nine. Plans for search dogs were made in the months after the second woman was found

@MaureenEBoyle1 the new bedford case is one of the clearest teaching files on how victim characteristics affected investigation urgency. all eleven women were flagged in prior arrests. the pattern was obvious by body three. the case started in earnest around body nine. the gap is the story.

In the spring of 1988, the nightmare began when the first of 11 women went missing in New Bedford, MA. Someone holds the answer. #truecrime #coldcase

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Very few people appreciate what America lost when we lost newspapers. Just being able to sit down every morning in silence and peruse news, opinion, sports, advice, recipes, interesting human interest stories all in one place was such a pleasure. The Internet has never produced anything that comes close.

@merewalton Almost never. And sometimes I will read, edit something, then go back later, reread, and change it back. I really should not have admitted to this!😁

My take on the Hegseth-Pierre "controversy." First of all, who knows? So far, it's not an especially "well-sourced" story. Now, I have little doubt that some officials could have spoken bluntly, even rudely, to Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the former Vatican ambassador to the US, given the language that has come out of this administration and its response to Pope Leo XIV's repeated calls for peace. Did someone at the meeting mention, of all things, the Avignonese papacy? Who knows? It sounds like something that someone with a grudge against the church wished had been said to Cardinal Pierre. But I highly doubt that Cardinal Pierre, a smart man, a kind priest, and, above all, a consummate diplomat, will ever say anything about what was said on the record. Nor will the Holy See or the current nuncio. For good measure, having known a few Vatican ambassadors, or "nuncios," most would have just nodded, smiled politely and said, "Thank you very much. I will convey your concerns to the Holy Father." And remember: Vatican diplomats have been dealing with world leaders since at least the time of Charlemagne. Many in the diplomatic corps today have been posted to any number of countries and have dealt with officials from around the world. They're used to all sorts of rude comments and even veiled threats. So, given that we will probably never know what really happened, why not move on to more pressing matters: that is, Pope Leo's repeated calls for peace and reconciliation.

NEW: For the first time in modern history, the Pentagon offered no Good Friday services for Catholics. While Catholics don't celebrate Mass on Good Friday, they do venerate the cross of Jesus Christ and receive the Eucharist. Earlier this year, Pete Hegseth invited his pastor to speak at the Pentagon. That pastor has called for banning public expressions of Catholicism in the United States. thelettersfromleo.com/p/trump-vance-…
