Today is February 19th, a day that carries a heavy weight for my family and for thousands of others across this country. It is the Day of Remembrance, marking the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which led to the forced relocation and incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. For many, this is a chapter in a history book. For me, it’s a story I carry in my DNA. In 1942, my father, Mike Kazuji Miyagishima, was just a child when he was taken from his home and sent to the Poston Internment Camp in Arizona. He spent four years of his youth behind barbed wire—not because of anything he had done, but because of how he looked and where his ancestors came from. When I think about my father’s journey—from the confines of a camp to serving honorably in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years—I am struck by the incredible resilience of the human spirit. He didn't let that injustice embitter him; instead, he taught me that the American dream belongs to everyone, provided we have the courage to protect the civil liberties that sustain it. New Mexico has its own complicated role in this history, housing camps in Santa Fe, Fort Stanton, Lordsburg, and Raton. We must remember these sites not to dwell on the past, but to ensure we never repeat its mistakes. As I run for Governor of New Mexico as an Independent, I do so with the lessons of my father’s life at the forefront of my mind: • Results over Labels: My father was judged by a label, not his character. In government, we must stop looking at party lines and start looking at the people we serve. • Protecting Rights: We must be vigilant against the "war hysteria" and prejudice that once clouded our judgment. Leadership means standing up for the constitutional rights of every New Mexican. • Unity: Our state is a beautiful tapestry of cultures—Japanese, Mexican, Indigenous, and beyond. Our strength is in our ability to lead together, moving past the divisiveness of modern politics. Today, let’s honor the survivors and the families who lost everything. Let’s commit to a future where "Never Again" is not just a phrase, but a promise kept by those in power.
