Abro 🧵

El Nino is getting most of the media attention, but IMO the ocean heatwaves elsewhere will also be messing with weather patterns in coming months. Note those dark red colors are 9 deg F above average, which is an absurd amount of ocean warming 😳

The extent of global sea ice cover remains record small for this time of year. Both poles are unusually low, but the largest departure is currently coming from the extreme event in the Antarctic. More global visuals at zacklabe.com/global-sea-ice…

The giant sequoia tree pictured was a magnificent specimen that had an estimated age of 2600 years at the time of its unfortunate felling in the 1890s. Giant sequoias (scientifically known as Sequoiadendron giganteum) are among the largest and longest-living trees on Earth, and their existence spans several millennia. They are native to the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, USA. During the late 19th century, the logging industry experienced a significant boom in the United States, driven by the high demand for timber to support expanding cities and infrastructure projects. This period coincided with the industrial revolution, which led to an increased need for lumber. The immense size and durability of giant sequoias made them particularly sought after, and sadly, many of these ancient trees were felled during this time. The cutting down of the 2600-year-old giant sequoia tree in the 1890s represents a tragic loss of natural heritage and a poignant reminder of the environmental impact caused by human activities. Today, there are efforts to protect and preserve the remaining giant sequoias, as they hold immense ecological value and are regarded as national treasures in the United States.

Has this ever happened before? 🌊🌡️📈Record high Sea Surface Temperatures 🌍🌡️📈Record high global air temperatures 🧊➡️🌊Record low global sea-ice extent All happening for the same day, May 23rd 2023. Normally heat flows around the planet and not all records break at once..

The whole North Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature is now 0.4°C higher than ever for this date. Because it takes >3000 times as much energy to heat water than air, this is an enormous increase.

Using two telescopes and over 280,000 individual photos, I captured my most detailed image of our moon. The full size is over a gigapixel. Trust me, you’ll want to zoom in on this one.

Nearly the entire #Arctic Ocean ice edge observed below average sea ice in March 2023. One exception was found in the Greenland Sea (Fram Strait), where a northerly flow contributed to anomalous ice export. [Data from @NSIDC. Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover]

Changes in November #Arctic sea ice volume since the year 1901 - I've now decided to permanently add this to my thickness/volume page for some pre-1979 perspective 😉 It will be updated the first week of each month at zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice….
