🇬🇧🎤 | George Russell attends the launch night of Kart Silverstone and gives an interview to ITV. 🎤: So the opening lap at Kart Silverstone, how was that? GR: It was great to be honest. I knew it was going to be a fast and flowing track, similar to the F1 circuit. They’ve done a really amazing job, good overtaking opportunities. And karting is where it all starts for all of us in F1, so a real pleasure to be here. 🎤: How would a young George Russell have found that? You know, how did karting shape your career? GR: Karting totally shaped my whole career. I was... I’ve got an older brother, Benjy, who used to race, he’s 10 years older than me, and I was born on the kart track. And that’s where my love for racing all started. But every single driver in F1 today started in karting, started between sort of five and eight years old, at a place like this. 🎤: And ITV Anglia viewers will know you’re a local lad, you know, born and raised near King’s Lynn and then training in Milton Keynes, racing in Milton Keynes. How special is it to have another karting track, a really good one, in the region? GR: It’s amazing because this is sort of the home of F1 around Silverstone. You know, when I was a kid, I just came here... I used to come here sometimes just to see the track, even when there was no racing on. It was so special. So now that you’ve got a real reason to come here... if you can't, you know, afford to come here for the race weekend for the F1, you can still come to Silverstone, you can still enjoy all the facilities. You know, we’ve got the kart track here, arrive and drive, you can get in one of these karts and give it a go, and that’s great. GR: Obviously, with this, it was a slightly unexpected break for us, and it would have been nice after a tough race in Japan just to get back to it. But this has been a good opportunity to make sure that we iron out any small cracks in the system. And going into Miami, I feel confident and just looking forward to it a lot. 🎤: So how has the season been so far in terms of the change in regulations, a new era? GR: Yeah, I mean, a totally new era. I think there’s obviously mixed reviews by certain people. I think from the neutral perspective, the racing’s been really great, better than ever. And you know, I’m really enjoying it. I speak with Lewis, he’s also really enjoying it as well. And the battling is a different dynamic to what we’ve seen before. And I think we’ve just got to give it time. F1 have already made some small changes to the regs just to fine-tune it and make it a little bit closer to where the drivers potentially want it, but so far I think it’s great. 🎤: And you welcome those sort of slight safety adjustments? GR: Yeah, for sure, for sure. I think with any major change, you’re never going to hit the ground running. And F1 always needed to give it a couple of races to understand what the problems are and how they’re going to resolve it. And that’s what they’ve done now, so let’s see next race. 🎤: And obviously, this is a huge moment for the region. What’s your message to youngsters like yourself growing up in the Anglia region that are looking to get into racing? GR: Well, if you want to get into racing, here’s the place to start. Oscar is so easy to support as a driver. I think he’s such a fantastic role model in that he’s always respectful, well spoken and not ashamed of his emotions. He’s calm and composed but never cold or rude. He gets back up after things so horribly wrong. I love my goat
