The Genova MeteoBus network is a @CIMAFoundation initiative within the I-CHANGE project, with the fundamental cooperation of AMT Genova, the Genova public transport company.

Genova is the first urban area where a MeteoBus network has been realized, allowing for a massive, ultra-high spatial resolution weather data collection. So far, 10 millions weatherpoints have been gathered (weatherpoint= 10 weather parameters geo-tagged and sent to the cloud).

The dataset collected proved, once again, the importance of the mobile paradigm in weather measurements, the only one able to provide metre-scale thermal maps based on ground-truth data.

A MeteoTracker weather device was installed on the bike handlebar and every few meters a weatherpoint (9 weather parameters) was collected, geo-tagged, visualised on the MT App and sent to the cloud.

Within the CityCLIM project, Karlsruhe was one of the cities where a hashtag#MeteoTracker heat mapping campaign was carried out by bikers involved in the citizen science project. youtube.com/watch?v=Eu2mYT…

🌡️Extreme heat in #Genoa: the Functional Center weather station recorded a temperature of 32.9°C on July 29, while @MeteoTracker sensors apparent temperatures up to 55,7°C! The data is the result of high temperatures and humidity contents associated with the African #heatwave.

A #heatwave bulletin of level 1 pre-alert was issued for Genoa on July 18. This is confirmed by data of @MeteoTracker installed on private cars and public transport, which recorded high discomfort values in city center, with localized #urbanheatisland effects. #citizenscience

The MeteoTracker “Team” suite (see link above) offers a full picture of the project on an interactive map, where all the main figures are displayed and many advanced features, like the Virtual Fixed Stations one, are made available.

30 units of MeteoTracker X are being deployed on the field, mostly on bikes, highlighting very well the positive impact - in terms of heat mitigation - of the urban greenery especially when the tree-rich areas are of a certain dimensions.
