"I am a man of 35 years old, but today,I feel like a stranger in my own house. I live in a one-room apartment with my wife. Last year, when my wife gave birth to our first son, my mother and my younger sister moved in to help with "Omugwo" (postpartum care). I was so happy. My mother is a widow; she sacrificed everything to send me to school, so having her around felt like a blessing. But it has been 14 months. They haven't left. Every night, my wife and I sleep on the bed with the baby, while my mother and my 22-year-old sister spread their mat on the floor right next to our bed. We are all breathing the same air in that small room. I'm frustrated, my mind is burning like fire inside & can't hold this to myself anymore. For one year, I have become a "celibate" man in my own marriage. Anytime I touch my wife at night, she jumps like a snake has bitten her. She will whisper, "Are you mad? Your mother is right there! My girlfriend is pregnant, and our pastor said he won’t wed us because we committed f0rnication. I met my girlfriend in the youth department of our church. She’s beautiful and calm. I asked her out, and she accepted. Before then, I had been looking for someone I could build something meaningful with and eventually marry. Last December, she told me she was pregnant and that I’m the only man involved. I accepted the responsibility. I went to her parents’ house, did the introduction, and collected the marriage list. For me, I believe traditional rites should come before the church wedding. In early February, I met with my pastor and told him I wanted to fix a wedding date around Easter. He was happy and asked me to bring my fiancée so he could meet her, which I did. One of the requirements in our church is that before you are wedded, you must present a pregnancy test result. I’ve seen people in the past bribe their way to get a negative result, but I didn’t want to start my marriage with a lie. So I told my pastor the truth even before the test result came out. He then said he wouldn’t wed us because it goes against the church’s teachings. For the past three weeks, I haven’t attended church. Now, I’m considering finding another church that will accept us and conduct the wedding.
