I thought Neil Kinnock would win. I had forgotten that John Major won by such a big margin in terms of vote share: 7.5%. Not so big in terms of seats. Major then threw it all away only a few months later on the European Exchange Rate mechanism debacle, from which he never recovered.

The idea of invading Iran is literally crazy. As John Gray noted in his @NewStatesman piece: ‘If [Trump] opts to “finish the job” and launches a ground operation, the US will be dragged into a debacle larger than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined.’

Scottish politics has completely lost the plot. A @TheGreenParty candidate openly calling for the abolition of prisons, yes, prisons, while posing next to a sign saying “No Prisons. No Borders. No Cages.” Think about that for a second. No prisons? So where exactly do rapists, violent criminals, and repeat offenders go? Back onto the streets? Back into your communities? And this isn’t some fringe anonymous voice, this is someone standing for public office in Scotland. Why would any sane person, let alone a woman, argue for releasing dangerous men from prison? Who exactly is that supposed to protect? This is what passes for “progressive” politics now. Ideology so detached from reality it actively puts the public at risk. Are these people, especially the Greens, genuinely serious, or just raving lunatics playing at politics? Ordinary people will be the ones who would pay the price for this madness.

This is a profoundly unsettling survey. Getting on for three-quarters of black Britons back the idea of taxpayers money going abroad to nations which insist they were set back by slavery. But less than a fifth of white Britons share that opinion. Wildly irreconcilable worldviews.
