My hypothesis is that a lot of grad school programs are signifiers not amplifiers - for the job market. So, basically, if you’re good enough for Harvard (synecdoche) to admit you, you’re good enough to work at X company. There needs to be a way to parlay your admission letter into a job without taking on the debt + opportunity cost.
