@michaelsobrien Making state used to be sweet 16 because all 16 teams made it to Champaign. “Making state” continued to be the sweet 16 after the advent of the supersectional in the mid 1950s. I believe if a team wins a sectional championship it qualifies as making state.

There's a ton of confusion around "making it to state" in hoops. The fans (and Sun-Times) considered it the final 8 in the 2-class era. Now it is the final 4...but the IHSA lists it as making the supers (in both eras, so final 16 then and final 8 now). So, yeah. That is a mess.

The WIU Women's Basketball team will face SEMO in Friday's 1 p.m. semifinal at the OVC Tourney. SEMO, the No. 8 seed defeated No. 4 seed Morehead St. 60-55 in quarterfinal. SEMO is the first No. 8 seed to win twice in the OVC Tourney. The Redhawks (14-17) have now won 6 straight.
