People treat the phrase “I don’t know” like it’s some kind of defeat or character flaw. As if admitting uncertainty is a weakness, a stain on your intelligence, or an invitation for others to look down on you. I see it the opposite way. I have far more respect for someone who has the intellectual honesty and courage to simply say, “I don’t know,” than for the person who confidently spouts nonsense just to avoid looking uninformed. The former shows self awareness, humility, and a genuine commitment to truth. The latter reveals insecurity dressed up as certainty. In a world drowning in performative expertise and loud opinions, the willingness to admit what you don’t know is quietly one of the most respectable traits a person can have. It’s the starting point of real learning, real growth, and real integrity.
