The fledgling Cowboys had a tough debut season in the ARL ,winning just two games, and it didn't get much tougher than when the Bears showed no mercy in this 60-6 thrashing - scoring 11 tries to 1. Happy Birthday to former Newtown and Canberra forward Dean Lance, who turns 67 today. Lance debuted for Newtown in '82 and when the Jets dissolved he joined Canberra for the '84 season. He and was made Captain of the Raiders in '86 - taking over from Ron Giteau. He led the Raiders to the '87 Grand Final and the Finals again in '88, but Tim Sheens dropped him during the '89 Season and Mal Meninga took over as Captain for the second half of the season. Although Meninga lifted the Winfield Cup first, Lance was the third Raider to touch lift the trophy after Bradley Clyde (on stage to accept the Clive Churchill Medal) stuck in to be second. Lance was going to retire after the '89 Grand Final win over Balmain, but stuck around for another run at a title in '90 with the Raiders, and went out with back to back Premierships when Canberra beat Penrith. He played an even 200 First Grade Games (40 with Newtown, and 160 with Canberra), winning 2 Premierships and playing in 3 Grand Finals. He also won the '90 Channel Ten Challenge Cup with Canberra. Penrith are seriously good, hungry, and have been unstoppable so far. But it’s 5 games. A little reduction in the over the top hype ‘all time greatest every time they play’ machine in commentary would be most welcome. It’s Round 5, the mute button shouldn’t be in use yet #NRL
