Part of what Death interesting in The Last Wish is how vindictive he really is, and when you look at it, you can see where he’s coming from. I’d say he’s more of a force of nature than an outright villain, which makes the existence of someone spitting in his face with their existence and minimizing his meaning into something cheap really piss him off to the point of breaking the rules. What’s even cooler is that Death also recognizes the weight of Life. He’s not against the concept, he understands it completely and knows his role in giving it that weight. To see Life itself treated so cheaply plays into his vindictive drive as well. Only when Puss realizes both the value of life and death does Death stop. He gets irritated, of course, but is nuanced enough to recognize that Puss is finally giving the process of living its proper due, so he goes back to his duty. God, The Last Wish was so good.
