Finished. A quietly compelling work, made all the more resonant in light of the ongoing US–Israel attacks on Iran with its reminder that "...democracy has to come from within, it doesn’t work when another country imposes it on you from outside."

I miss Gabi. I wish things had been different. I don't usually let myself linger on the what ifs but this time it’s hard not to.

reading beloved and while not an easy book but such a thing of beauty that in a story of so much pain i have read the most gorgeous lines about cooking and food and nature and people trying to live TONI MORRISON FOREVER

Cafe stop at Cyberjaya, a quaint cafe called Neibour Cafe. Love the cozy vibe and the small section of bookshelves with mostly local books. The coffee is good too✨️

Absolutely floored by She Who Remains, loved On Earth As It Is Beneath as well, on the fence about The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran and probably need to try harder with Taiwan Travelogue. Will meet The Director and The Witch in due time.

Still keen to read Small Comfort, The Wax Child, The Remembered Soldier and The Deserters though.

The shortlist for the International Booker Prize 2026 is out. Absolutely loved She Who Remains and On Earth As It Is Beneath. Quite undecided about The Director though I see why it’s admired by many. Still reading The Nights Are Quite in Tehran.

Since ch 4, it’s been one massacre and expulsion after another. Was horrified to read about Dawaymeh at the end of ch 8. This massacre, maybe worse than Deir Yassin was mostly hidden as the Arab Legion concealed the news, likely fearing another refugee wave and blame for inaction

Ch 5 is quite plainly one of the most distressing things I’ve read. The harrowing account of the displacement, the hesitant responses within the Arab world compounded by Jordan's collusion with the Zionists and the grave neglect and failure by the UN and the British authorities
