You need grain oriented steel to make utility transformers. There's ~2k different types of steel and 80% were developed in the last 30 years-ish. Grain oriented steel minimizes energy losses through precise grain alignment during manufacturing. "grain" refers to the individual crystals (or crystal grains) that make up the polycrystalline metal structure of the steel.
