Given the state pension is £12,500 and the tax free allowance is almost exactly the same amount, surely anyone who has got a second pension or other income is automatically paying tax on it? What am I missing here?

I think a lot of people do not realise that there are now 2 types of state pension. Those who reach state pension age on or after 6th April 2016 will now get £241.30 per week those who retired before that date will get £184.90.

Do you find this with your fresh vegetables? It’s because they store it all in cold storage so it’s not even fresh! So I’ve started buying from odd box or local farmers! Stop buying from large supermarkets! You end up chucking it away! Buy from local farmers !

@latsot It has probably been recently released after injury or infection and is being monitored. But you are correct- a more subtle mark would be better rather than a “target”. It needs to be visible at night though.

Some idiot has painted a cross on one of the hedgehogs, presumably so they can identify it, for some reason. If you want to identify hedgehogs, do it the proper way: pay attention to their size, shape and albedo. It's not hard if you're not lazy. Painting them is a bad thing. Don't handle hedgehogs (or *any* other wild animals) unless you need to and don't paint a target on them to mark them out by sight or smell to predators. It's stressful for them, the paint might be toxic and it can make it hard for them to curl up when they sense a threat. Just don't fuck with wild animals at all, they are not toys. They are not here for our entertainment. We should be delighted when they visit, not mark them as property.

@Edwina_Currie My mother when she got married in 1957, had to stop work, and pass her job to another single woman. I expected the younger generations to be better educated. How do they not know the social history of women’s rights in the uk workplace .The ignorance is sad

I love the tradition of going to the chippy on Good Friday (even if I have to admit I don’t love fish). 🐟 It was fab to meet Graham, the man behind the brilliant @BellsFishRestau in Durham. Bells is a family business that’s been going nearly 40 years and they’re in good company in the North East- we have plenty to choose from. I don’t think you can beat a good, northern chips and gravy - definitely a tradition in itself (😬). What’s your favourite North East Chippy and what are you ordering on Good Friday? 💛

A lot of nonsense circulating today about how the EU will force us to relabel marmalade as "Citrus Marmalade". The truth: The new law's requirements will be met if the citrus fruit is named, so e.g. "Orange Marmalade" would be fine. You merely can't use "Marmalade" on its own.

My laundrette is closed on Good Friday. This reminded me of my Mum, who knew a surprising amount about folk tradition (no idea where she got it from) and considered it both disrespectful and downright unlucky to do laundry on Good Friday.

Seeing a spectacular burst of colour from forsythia every spring is magical. But how do you ensure that you always have one? It all comes down to timing… The secret is simple: prune straight after flowering, not later. Here’s why this matters so much: ✂️ Forsythia flowers on wood produced the previous year 🌿 By summer, it’s already forming next year’s flower buds ❌ Prune too late, and you’ll cut away next spring’s display So timing is everything. As soon as those golden blooms fade: 🔍 Check for wildlife first; early nesting birds may already be using the branches ✂️ Then lightly prune to shape and control size 🌿 This encourages fresh new growth that will carry next year’s flowers And here’s why forsythia is such a valuable addition to any garden… 🌼 One of the earliest spring flowering shrubs — a vital splash of colour when little else is blooming 🐝 Supports early pollinators emerging from winter 🌿 Fast-growing and reliable — ideal for hedging, borders, or as a statement shrub 🌸 Low maintenance, high impact — perfect for both new and experienced gardeners 💡 Expert tip: Every few years, remove a couple of the oldest stems at the base — this rejuvenation pruning keeps the plant vigorous and floriferous. Get this right, and your forsythia will reward you with a brighter, bolder display year after year. Prune at the right time… and let the plant do the rest 🌿 Save this so you don’t miss your moment 👇 #GardenTips #SpringGarden #UKGardening #Pruning #FloweringShrubs
