@orzelc It's ironic since there is so much timekeeping in the system, but no one seems to count how much these extra compliance things cost

This position is funded by the META-PIX Center at Chalmers, which aims to use inverse design and heterogeneous integration for next generation integrated photonics. The successful candidate will therefore enjoy the benefits of the strong Chalmers photonics environment.

We are hiring another postdoc: If you are interested in designing and fabricating photonics for interfacing with cold atoms, check it out and send me an email for more information! Link in thread

Another nice feature of being in Norway: This Site is giving me trending topics in the sidebar that I assume are rage-bait, but I can't understand any of them.

animations / smooth transitions are a waste of time and adiabatic murdering. i would never forgive apple for making the default transition between spaces/virtual desktops this slow. did you know you can three fringer swipe real fast to make the transition faster than the default? why?? why is it not instant by default?? why is there only an option to reduce animation instead of turning it off completely??? evil company.

When we tried to enhance microwave atomic clocks with spin squeezing during my phd we quickly hit the limits of our microwave oscillator. Check out the work from JILA in PRL, where they do 5 orders of magnitude better than us: journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…

It's very exciting to see Jun Ye's group at @JILAscience using entangled states to improve atomic clocks performing close to the state of the art. It's a true feat of both classical and quantum engineering.

@jwt0625 They wrote an article about it in nat. nano, in fig 1c you can see one of our finest tumbleweed resonators

@jwt0625 Yeah it was made by Mohammad Bereyhi (now luxtelligence), we were hoping it would catch on, but always hard with these things. Would be cool to see more stuff!

maybe journals should also start enforcing a fab process reporting summary Yue2022: [Chip-scale high-peak-power semiconductor/solid-state vertically integrated laser](doi.org/10.1038/s41467…)

@NilsEngelsen @thomasgwong I'll have to look at those; I'm an experimentalist by training so I was mostly thinking of stuff like the Aspect experiments, Itano and Wineland on quantum jumps/ quantum Zeno, maybe Kimble on antibunching. I remember those all being pretty well written, but need a refresh.

My upper-level elective course for next term has passed from "I hope enough students sign up for this to run" to "Yikes! Too many papers to grade!" Which, admittedly, is not the worst problem to have...

Probably going to use some of the (free) materials on QC from Scott Aaronson and @thomasgwong, and may try to have them read primary sources on the QO side. It'll be fun, but also exhausting...

We are hiring a postdoc! The postdoc will work on our project coupling single strontium atoms to nanoscale defect cavities with the ultimate goal of creating quantum states of massive mechanical resonators. Contact me if you are interested, link in replies.
