In Oromia Region’s East Arsi Zone, Shirka Woreda — On Monday evening, October 27, 2025, around 10:00 p.m. local time, reports indicate that Orthodox Christians were brutally killed and others abducted in an area called Zembaba Arsema. “…Earlier this week, the perpetrators had also attacked Debre Wegag Asebot Holy Trinity Monastery, slaughtering some and abducting others, and demanded ransom payments in the millions of birr. Reports suggest that members of Abune Sawiros’s group in the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church were pressuring the clergy not to report the news so as not to tarnish the government’s image. “…In the Arsi massacre, the attackers reportedly dragged Orthodox Christians out of their homes and executed them publicly. The perpetrators are said to be forces backed by the Oromo Prosperity Party regime who refer to themselves as the ‘Oromo Islamic Government.’ Confirmed victims among those killed include: 1️⃣ Mamush Debebe, age ~30 2️⃣ Tigest Jimma, age ~50 3️⃣ Gizaw Ketema, age ~40 Their funeral service was held today, October 28, 2025, at Zembaba St. Arsema Church.
