Cape Town now has the tallest building in the world that is made out of Hemp 🍁 🍁 Floors: 12 🍁 Apartments: 50 🍁 Architect: Wolf + Wolf 🍁 Development name: Shiro Towers 🍁 Location: 84 Harrington Street, #CapeTown  🍁 Building materials used in construction: Hempcrete blocks It’s been a slow journey watching this building go up. This development has taken over 4 years to build. None of the units in this development are for sale, rather it will consist of a Hemp Hotel component and rental stock. There will also be a Hemporium store on the ground floor. The hemp building blocks are carbon negative which makes these materials environmentally friendly. This sustainable way of building with plant-based material helps to save on energy costs and consumption. For this specific development, the hemp was imported from the UK which increased the construction costs for this building. Thanks to new hemp licence regulations in #SouthAfrica, sourcing the hemp locally should be much easier and cheaper in the future. I love the East City area and creative vibe of Harrington Street. The area attracts creative businesses, designers, foodies, coders, artists, photographers, and students. This precinct borders the #CapeTown CBD and offers easier access to transport routes and less degraded buildings when compared to that of its other neighbour, Woodstock.
