Anton Vladimirovich Stankevich was a hereditary nobleman and general in the Russian Imperial Army who voluntarily joined the Red Army in 1918. During the fighting near Orel on October 13, 1919, he was captured by the White Guards as a result of treason. Loyal to Soviet power, he refused to defect to the White Guards and was hanged by them on October 17, 1919 (this method of execution for a high-ranking military officer was considered shameful). He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner. By decree of the Revolutionary Military Council of the RSFSR, his body was transported to Moscow and buried with full military honors on Red Square near the Kremlin wall on November 10, 1919. Thus, Stankevich is the only imperial general buried on Red Square.
