The National Institutes of Health just released a new funding opportunity to support the development of human-based research infrastructure!
The agency will fund institutions to construct or modernize collaborative research facilities that support nonanimal approaches, including imaging centers, biorepositories, and other shared resources for new approach methodologies (NAMs).
In a public comment that Physicians Committee experts submitted to the NIH back in September, we included a recommendation that the agency employ this exact grant mechanism, highlighting the need for more federal investment in infrastructure that enables modern, human-based research methods.
Investing in new and existing facilities to better support human-based science will help accelerate medical progress while reducing reliance on animals in research. Our medical research team will continue to ensure the NIH follows through on the commitment it made in 2025 to prioritize human-based research.
