Despite attempts to contact the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), no response was received, as it was Sunday, highlighting concerns over the PMC's unavailability in emergency situations. A city-based lawyer, Divya Chavan Jachak, has emerged as a stalwart in the fight against climate change with her initiative, known as ‘Pune Climate Warrior,’ reaching as many as 80 schools over the course of a year. The initiative is designed to instill climate consciousness through the minds of children, specifically those studying in grades six to nine. Her movement is not limited to Pune and has extended its roots to schools in Sangli, Nagpur, and Phaltan. These include Zilla Parishad schools and schools affiliated to state and central boards. Her mother, Vandana Chavan, a Rajya Sabha MP, has been standing firmly with and lending her support to her daughter in her mission. I have raised the issue of Pune’s dangerous River Front Development in the Assembly today. 6000 trees proposed to be cut for riverfront development! While in principal, we all want river rejuvenation and riverfront development, this current plan as studied by environmentalists and urban planners, will destroy Pune’s geography, cultural history and ecology in the long run.
