My first cousin on my mother’s side is a professional who was posted to South Africa six months ago on an eight-month contract, for the past month, I have been trying to reach him, because of the tension calling for foreigners to return to their countries. I finally got through to him a few minutes ago and was relieved to hear he is doing well, I was amazed when he said he has not personally encountered any protests in his area, he only sees them on tv, he lives just a few houses away from the presidential villa, which he says feels quite secure. According to him, the protests are driven by deep frustration among many South Africans, he agrees that some locals can be laid-back, partly because the government provides significant social support. However, he was blunt about what he sees as a major issue: the activities of some Nigerian groups, particularly Igbos, whom he believes are contributing heavily to the problem. He mentioned seeing Igbos hawking goods on the streets, similar to what happens in parts of Lagos, and alleged that some are involved in recruiting young, naive South Africans into drug peddling. In his view, these activities have damaged the country’s social fabric. He even said that if he were South African and witnessed certain groups engaging in widespread illegal and disruptive behaviour, he would understand why citizens would want them out. He’s not alone in this sentiment, many in Nigeria’s South West have also experienced similar complaints about certain elements within the Igbo community- restlessness, a “get-rich-quick” mentality, and involvement in various illegal activities that strain host communities.
