@PeterTLunt

I am a undergraduate earth scientist at Durham University. I have a deep interest in volcanology, and am keen to pursue a career in research and risk mitigation

@GeoIntern The end of our fieldwork? Hopefully not! Although we finished our work with @GeoIntern today by completing a final log of La Tarta - a creamy, cake-like pumice fall - I hope to return to Tenerife for more. Big thanks to Rich Brown of @DurUniEarthSci for all his help. #Tenerife

@GeoIntern Despite blazing heat and precarious scree slopes, today's fieldwork with @GeoIntern finished successfully. We were hunting the 350 Ka Roque formation and, after a tough set of hikes up the caldera wall, we uncovered it. Its poor documentation makes this a key find! #Geology

Being able to read a volcano's eruptive past is key to forecasting the future risk it poses. For the next 2 weeks, I'll be putting this into practice with @GeoIntern. We'll be deciphering Tenerife's ignimbrites to interpret the island's explosive history. #volcano #Tenerife

Tenerife has extraordinary natural beauty. But, with @GeoIntern, I'm learning that it's not just Teide's soaring peak that showcases it. Ignimbrites, with their tiger-like colours, are not only impressive but also record the changing chemistry of a pyroclastic flow. #Tenerife

During my geophysical fieldwork today with @CSICdivulga as part of @GeoIntern, I had the privilege to interview @pabloj_gonzalez. He explained how fieldwork like this provides an important crossover between volcanic monitoring and management of groundwater supplies.

How do we look beneath the ground? I learnt today whilst using a geophone and GPS device to measure the micro seismicity in the Lleno de Maja basin. Our data will be used to see how the water table is reacting to local usage. A big thanks to @GeoIntern and @CSICdivulga for this!

Where does your water come from? On Tenerife, that's a disputed question. Currently, the island relies on water galleries - pipes that efficiently carry water from the aquifers. But, as @jaimecoello explained to me during @GeoIntern, tourism is pushing them to their limit.

Volcanology is a sector that demands unity. The challenges posed by volcanic hazards means the skills of politicians, local people, and scientists are key. Interviews like this one with @IGNSpain as part of @GeoIntern have introduced me to just one part of this diverse sector.

Exploring Tenerife's basaltic a'a lava flows with @GeoIntern and @muffaios! Fascinating that the basalts forming this ancient lava flow are now used as a construction material all over the island. Geology is everywhere if you know where to look for it!
