@Mgwaith Tide is slowly turning against the stupidity of having identity & performative politics at the centre of the pitch to the electorate. For eg: racism, sexism & every other ‘ism’ has become worse beneath/above the surface in past few decades since mainstream parties embraced it.

@PhilJones33 For example, 'net zero'. It is an easy fix but lots of toes will be stepped on, ( = lots of money involved) can you take the hate from the media/vested interests? That's the real question.

(1) Danger of politicians like Trump are writ large but how do mainstream European politicians prevent fellow travellers like Farage from gaining power? Without fixing basics: declining public services, crumbling infrastructure, high cost of living etc, bellicose populists

@Mgwaith I find it hard to give Trump credit for anything but his only redeeming feature is that he’s not a slave to free mkt ideology. In fact he’s far more interventionist than most US presidents. He’s still a colossal moron though.

@PhilJones33 There are many easy fixes but you have to be willing to be unpopular to enact them. Hence Trump. (And maybe he isn't as bad as you've been led to believe, its just that by doing things which were necessary he's created a lot of enemies.)

(5) There are ofc no easy fixes but we do, at least, need to stop putting so many open goals in the path of the new right. Hopefully, Farage & co will be damaged by association with Trump but failure to fix underlying basics will see them rise again rapidly.

(4) needs urgent fixing. Dominant ideology of toxic identity politics among mainstream political parties also needs to go - it’s a gift to the new right & divides communities. Tighter border controls & less dogmatic approach to net zero also needed.
