@thecavemommy Minivans are fine up to 5 kids - it helps to get a middle bench rather than the ubiquitous captains chairs. Past that you are in van territory, and vans are great!

@bafooma ??? This looks like fun! I would add a stop at Frankenmuth to relieve the boredom between Saginaw and Ann Arbor. Not much you can do between AA and Chicago that I know of. Only question is which direction is best. I would do Huron side first.

When you talk about culture there is thin (fashion, food, music, etc.) and thick (what is the Good? What constitutes a fulfilling life? What is the highest human achievement?), and for the U.S., our thick culture is largely inherited from Western Europe, mostly England, and is best summarized as Careerist Protestant Christianity—a prosperity theology manifest as the American Dream, which synthesizes a moral order built on the Ten Commandments, overlaid with a heavy dose of Lockean individualism and Enlightenment rationalism. Thin culture gets all the attention, but it is the thick culture that makes a nation and determines its long-term path.

"Yes, there was a sex ring. The multimillionaire at the heart of it traveled with a harem of women and used them for his own sexual needs. But he regularly pimped them out to high-profile men as well. He assigned each woman a number so that the john, after viewing what was on offer, would just have to tell him which number he wanted. When the pimp had used up a particular woman, he’d discard her and replace her with a new one. It was really as vile as all that, and it’s absolutely true. The guy bragged about it. Jeffrey Epstein? Heck, no. I’m talking the man who’s currently being celebrated for his role as honorary coach of Team USA at the Winter Olympics: Snoop Dogg, America’s most beloved thug."

It's been the coldest winter in more than two decades for swaths of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. In New York, you'd have to go back to the mid-1990s to find a colder one. Some younger people would be experiencing the coldest winter of their lives so far.

Canada just euthanized its 100,000th citizen. I had no idea the scale of this madness. When you read heroic colonial Canadian histories from guys like @FortySacks and @martianwyrdlord, you have to mourn a proud frontier civilization that got bored and chose to kill itself.

@pegobry_en Curling is good but should bocce be an Olympic sport? I mean it would be better than mixed doubles rock climbing relays or whatever.

I'm not sure that our collective obsession over the Epstein files is really a pure and righteous desire to fight the evils of human trafficking. Rather, I worry that people focus so much on Epstein because there's something appealing about despairing over problems that can't be solved. If every politician and powerful figure on earth is involved, if it's a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top, if it's a CABAL of evildoers, then you really can't fix it. You're powerless, which means you can tell yourself that you're fighting against injustice by doing nothing more than lamenting the unconquerable evil it from your couch. So if you want to fight human trafficking and child exploitation in a more meaningful way, get to work locally. Virtually every dubious "massage salon" in America is filled with victims of human trafficking, including the ones in your town. Stop giving your kids unfettered access, via their phones and devices, to pornography, which is infinitely more responsible for trafficking and exploitation than Epstein ever was. Work with your local and state governments to combat these evils. You don't have to be paralyzed by despair over Unconquerable Evils. Fight the good fight five feet in front of you.

My wife gets her news from I Instagram, where she hears about the big stories 2 days after I learn all about them here. We talk about politics for about 10 minutes a month. Her instincts are good, that's pretty much all that matters.

Political takes are too dependent on a person's specific information pipeline. I dont remember ever talking about politics while we were dating. I knew that she wasn't getting her information the same way I was, so it was going to be awkward and unnecessary.
Coddled Affluent Professional@feelsdesperate

I don’t think my wife and I ever ‘discussed politics’ the first couple years we were dating. If you’re dating someone attractive in their 20s who you like why would you want to hear about their ‘political opinions’? The idea just seems crazy to me.
