@sorel_arbeiter @FortySacks If we did just that; I wonder what the chances are that we would just end up with another Laurentian elite dominated government considering that is where the population is. That is where largest economies are. I just don’t think Canada can be adequately governed as is.

@CoopTory Being landlocked doesn’t really mean anything. Landlocked countries are guaranteed port access by the UN - which Canada is a member of. But 90% of Alberta’s trade is already done with the US so it wouldn’t change that much.

All those countries either have direct access to “tidewater” or in the EU. Alberta is landlocked and would not be part of a broader political union, unless it was effectively a puppet state of the United States. Alberta cannot operate as a truly independent country.

The myth that Alberta “cannot survive on its own” falls apart when you compare Alberta to countries of similar size. With about 5 million people, Alberta already produces GDP in the range of wealthy independent nations like New Zealand and Finland, based on current economic data. And that is before removing Ottawa’s overhead and the billions that leave Alberta now. Alberta would not be a poor country struggling to survive. It would begin as a small, wealthy, trade-driven nation with strong economic fundamentals.

@kinskrig @un_posting @AyyLeaf @FortySacks I said Canada could do things to lower prices. Not make it free. Fuel tax reductions would lower the price of gas at the pumps. Remove or reduce carbon pricing. Increase refining capacity and improve infrastructure.
