@SolomonMic19796 “Why is everything suddenly an inquisition?” There literally hasn’t been one Oakland native in history who speaks like this …

@Nasser104262521 They annoying me because southern Yemenis are famously enterprising but are perpetually stuck at the bodega owner tier. No that’s sort of my line. May be Somalis a little.

@kingsinboats That is, 7th century coins could show up somewhere in the 9th century, reducing its evidentiary value as a dating tool.

@kingsinboats reason for coin travel. We have 2nd to 6th century Roman coins in India, this doesn’t show Roman settlement. Second, once a coin is put in the stream of foreign commerce, it usually isn’t recoined. So a 7th century coin could be recirculating in foreign lands up to 200 years.

@americakaran One issue pertains to thresholds. My line is permanent Muslim settlements (as opposed to semi-permanent visitors). The visitor stuff could even have happened in the 7th century. But I’m still looking for evidence to definitively date re 8th century. But I agree it’s reasonable.

Gujarat / MH should be revised down to, at least, 813 AD (but probably way earlier). Kerala should inversely be revised up, but unclear to when. But the endpoint of both places would ultimately be proximate.

is of the opinion that the Coastal Muslims who eventually usurped the Jews at Calicut were proto-Konkanis who moved south from further northwest, exploiting at first the KL import dependence on rice and salt. Agri Muslims?

The relevant ports are Thane, GJ & Calicut, KL. The two competing theories are (i) genealogical descent (i.e., those who settled Thane were lineally related to those who overtook, Calicut) & (ii) contemporaneous settlement. Pius Malekandathil, stalwart of IND Maritime history,

@kingsinboats My current position is that Gujarati-Konkani Muslims were the first coastal Shafi’is, predating us by at least 40 years (may be more).

@Prepetitioning There are some books I'm yet to read on. If I come across any, I'll lyk. But I'm pretty sure it's way before 850. Also, they were Nasranis, but not Persian. I think they were Yemenis with a Persian Governor. Tam M history won't be given all that effort.

@kingsinboats Even the 7th century KL claims seem to be bogus, there is no evidence of a Muslim community in Malabar even in 851 AD( we know this through the أخبار الصين والهند travelogue). We also know that Tamil Shafi’is are immigrants from KL (so must be even later).

@WDLD0712 Not comparable to the Palace, but semi-recently there was a controversy about someone taking down a dilapidated SW IND legacy house (called the Marikkar House) belonging NHM Naina Marikar (old finance minister under JR Jayawardena) and building new-age dravslop atop it.
