Over the past few hours, our armed forces, with the support of the French Defence, have boarded an oil tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet. The vessel is currently being escorted to the port of Zeebrugge, where it will be seized. Operation Blue Intruder was carried out by a team of exceptionally brave service members. Excellent work. Four years after Russia’s invasion, the brave Ukrainians continue to fight every single day to protect their country, their freedom, and their future. Yesterday, together with Minister Theo Francken, we visited Promote Ukraine to offer encouragement to courageous people who, despite everything, continue to stand tall and fight for their homeland. As an Iranian-Flemish woman and politician, I have always felt deeply connected to their cause, for many reasons. Ukraine is fighting against the invasion of a common enemy. A country that forms the gateway to Europe is being brutally attacked. This is not only Ukraine’s war, this is also our war. Because when freedom is attacked at Europe’s borders, our own freedom is threatened as well. The support of the ayatollahs for Russia, with Shahed drones massively attacking Ukrainian infrastructure, confirms what I have long known: the enemies of Europe and of the Iranian people are working together. Totalitarian regimes find each other in their hatred of the West, of freedom, of democracy. That is why I felt such a strong connection with these brave people from the very beginning. Their struggle resembles ours. Russia seeks to occupy Ukraine — just as the ayatollahs occupy my beautiful motherland, Iran. For the first anniversary of the war, I voluntarily traveled to Kyiv. I saw the devastation with my own eyes. The traces of bombardments. I heard inhuman stories. I had heartbreaking conversations with people who had lost everything — except their dignity and their will to fight. Born and raised in Iran, I learned one thing early on: the axis of evil grows stronger every day. These are totalitarian regimes that have nothing in common except one thing — they are all against the West, against freedom, against people who want to decide their own future. That is why I have also committed myself in parliament, in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Not out of political calculation, but out of conviction. Because we must actively stand up for the interests of the West, for our security, for our values. Together with Minister Francken, who consistently advocates for a strong defense, for NATO and for European cooperation, we have argued for years for resilience. For strength. For preparedness. Because peace without strength is an illusion. We continue our struggle, for a just world that protects and defends freedom. One of the most beautiful moments of the evening were the emotional conversations — words spoken straight from the heart. And the visit to the Borshch Museum. Borshch (борщ) in Ukraine is much more than soup. It is a symbol of family. Of warmth. Of hospitality. Of national identity. It is cultural heritage, just like freedom. We will continue our struggle against totalitarian regimes. We understand each other — perhaps better than anyone. Because we know what it means to have an occupied homeland.
