FIVE hours after the administration promises to “Rededicate America as One Nation Under God” the President decides to promote one of the most evil and dehumanizing tropes a people group has ever encountered. I’m grateful that I know the God of the Bible and his spirit lives within me. I’m grateful that the Jesus my mother and father introduced me to through the pages of scripture was never cloaked in an American flag or bound by the customs of colonialism. Im grateful that I never thought Christianity and Americanism were synonymous, some sacred birthright for those who call this republic home. This marriage of God and country is dangerous and this seemingly simple post serves as both a harbinger and a hallmark. How many people have been fooled into thinking their salvation is a benefit of their passport status instead of their repentance? How many souls have shunned the truth of the gospel because it has been perverted, whitewashed and deployed as a weapon of oppression? Frederick Douglass’s timeless words ring true, “Between the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference.” God help us.
