I’ve been watching a lot of Rugby lately, and it got me thinking about how we could speed the game up and open it up a bit more. One idea I had, hear me out. To encourage more offloads and reduce the number of rucks, what if when a team knocks the ball on, they’re not allowed to touch it next which currently results in a scrum. If they do, it’s a long arm penalty. That gives the opposition guaranteed first rights to the ball. They can pick it up and play immediately with a backward pass, or if they want to slow it down, it could work similar to an AFL mark and you have 10 seconds to resume play or it’s a turn over again. If you step off the mark, you’re live and can be tackled. The goal is simple, reward teams that want to play fast, create more chaos, and reduce stoppages? Questions - would this ruin our beautiful game and allow less skilled players to play (which is what most people want inclusivity) Would it make it slower? Faster? There’s nothing wrong with our game?

The part of the game I’m struggling to enjoy right now is the number of long cut out passes being thrown. Bit ironic really, considering I probably threw more than anyone back in the day 🙃

Shout out to coach Dave Rennie. After the way he was treated by our administration in Australia, to now find himself with arguably the biggest job in rugby feels like a little bit of karma. We let one of the best coaches in the game go. Not only did we let him go, we pushed him out the door. So seeing him land on his feet like this, I’m genuinely happy for him. The “what could have been” might still come back to bite us, especially with a home World Cup coming in hot. Funny how the universe works sometimes. Congrats to the All Blacks for appointing not just a top coach, but a good man who understands that the game is about people first. That will play a huge role in their culture. PS. You’re the enemy now though 🤝✊🏽🤎

Watched the Wallabies replay this morning and damn, it was a tough watch. I genuinely feel for the players, because it’s clear they’re operating without a real system that gives them a chance to create good match ups. I’ve said it before, but their structure keeps putting them in bad areas of the field, and when that happens the only option left is hoping someone can produce a moment of individual brilliance. No team can thrive like that.

@MarkDGoldCoast Don’t be silly. Defense in rugby is super complicated compared to league. League d coach will be great for collisions but not system defense

@QuadeCooper Some horrible decisions in Defence and in attack they lack confidence…. Still think some NRL level coaches in D and A could unlock them…

@Bellster74 Well it’s personal and practice right. When we had Israel no one wanted to kick the ball because he was personally dominant in the air. We have our 10s back a lot and get targeted because it’s not a 10s strength.

@QuadeCooper Quade what is your view on why our aerial game is so deficient? Receptions are getting progressively worse.Opps use it as a key attacking path to beating us now.Appreciate that’s a universal tactic now b we are getting eaten alive now. Our own kicking is now suffering as a result

Yeah we understood that system perfect. He had it mapped out clear and it was easy for me to put us in the right spots. It’s essentially the same system that they are playing now but it was a lot more detailed in how we operated it. Rules and guidelines that keep the shape alive and created the match ups we wanted

@Redline334581 Exactly watch their system allows the game drivers to play heads up footy when you create mismatches and one on ones that’s where a players Indian brilliance comes out. If your system doesn’t provide that you are just one player going against 15

@QuadeCooper Think they are lacking the game plan manager. Watching Gibson park play eyes up footy all night, sniping kicks, changing the direction of play etc . Was Aaron smith esq.

@wombat_wood @wallabies And praised when we win a few.. but I’ve only heard good things about him as a coach but he needs to fix the attack system that’s all. Not a big issue

Too many..I agree. It’s not about blaming the coach. It’s about fixing the system they’re playing in, because there are huge flaws that any high level professional player can see. Since you don’t have that understanding, of course it all just looks like effort and attitude. But the system matters. 🤝

@QuadeCooper Commentators in this part of the world have dined out on criticising Wallabies coaches since the heady days of Rod McQueen's all- conquering Wallabies. I've lost count of how many coaches the Wallabies have had since, and non have been successful. Stop blaming the coaches.

@friendtolepers @HQuarterma44846 I don’t know their game plan so can’t comment on that but certainly can see that their system is not functioning in the correct way it’s supposed to when you’re playing in a 1-3-2-1-1

@HQuarterma44846 @QuadeCooper That coach hasn’t seemed to evolve though. Trying to make the Wallabies succeed with a game plan that was novel ten years ago.

@QuadeCooper It’s not the coach that’s the issue it’s the system and super rugby. Either extend the SR season and get investors to bring in worlds best players or offshore the wallabies like Boks have done.

@QuadeCooper It’s funny because their coach has had superb success and results at every other team he was involved in…. The Wallabies simply are not that good - they lack depth and when a few keys players are missing, they lack in the forwards. They lack team spirit and fight

@QuadeCooper Agreed Lineouts have been terrible for at least last 5 games. Backdoor too shallow. Pods have no momentum keeps box kicking because of no plans(giving free balls to opp) Backs comms on goal line defences. Unnecessary attacks to outwide with no creativity and view on No.10
