T.O.P has previously revealed through various media that he spends over 95% of his income on purchasing artworks. Behind his glamorous life in the entertainment industry, what he is most devoted to is none other than “art collecting.” Even while on overseas tours, he is known for enjoying “art tours,” visiting local museums and galleries instead of clubs, and his home is said to be managed so meticulously that it rivals a professional gallery.
His exceptional eye for aesthetics is also closely tied to his family background. Renowned master of Korean abstract art, Kim Whanki, is his maternal great-uncle (his grandfather’s brother). From a young age, T.O.P was naturally exposed to the works of great masters, which helped cultivate his artistic sensibility. This background laid the foundation for him to grow beyond simply following trends, becoming a collector with a deep understanding of the value of modern and contemporary Korean art.
T.O.P's influence goes beyond mere ownership. In 2016, he collaborated with the world-renowned auction house Sotheby's to personally plan and curate a special auction titled #TTTOP in Hong Kong. He received global acclaim from the art world for carefully selecting and presenting works ranging from contemporary art masters such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons to leading figures of Korean Dansaekhwa like Park Seo-bo and Lee Ufan.
It is considered a highly unusual case for an idol-turned-artist to debut as a curator at one of the world's most prestigious auction houses.
