The framing for this has always seemed strange to me.
Surgery has a 0% failure rate at preventing recurrent appendicitis (yes if done well) and antibiotics a 44% failure rate.
Unless surgery is strongly contraindicated, appendectomy seems like the right choice.

The good news: Arkansas survives in OT at Missouri.
The bad news: Tennessee is down 6 against Vanderbilt.
A&M’s path to the No. 5 seed is still alive for now, but they need the Vols to come back.
With a win over LSU, A&M is guaranteed a top 7 seed.

@SeanLangenfeld Everyone knows that they do it because that’s what the game is.
The established people have created this problematic system they know they can’t fix themselves for fear of losing their own positions. It’s not fair to expect that the young people will fix this for them.

We created a broken application system where research "experience" is over-rewarded, and then we wag our finger at the young doctor for not doing it right.
"Research for the sole purpose of publication or CV padding" is probably 80+% of research.

I think of this whenever I see a trainee post about having 10+ abstracts accepted to a single conference. To me, that many abstracts is almost always a red flag. Research for the sole purpose of publication or CV padding without actually aiming to advance science is a travesty.

The “big tube vs pigtail” debate is outdated.
Pigtails perform just as well (if not better) for most HTX/PTX.

Temper expectations, both teams were shorthanded and ASU should finish at the bottom of the Big 12.
This team will get better as time goes on so for a first live rep, I liked what I saw, but I know there’s still a while to go before they reach their potential. It’s gonna take some time with this system.
But 95 points on a bad first half shooting should get everyone fired up about this offense’s potential.

@DGlaucomflecken I believe the thinking is that one year is not enough time to do any substantive research, and real training for an academic career would be 2–3 years of research.

I recently heard that some surgical residency programs have TWO research years, and that this requirement is not considered a punishment. Please somebody explain.
