Diablo II (also with its Lord of Destruction expansion) is widely considered by a large portion of longtime Diablo fans to be the best game in the franchise.
It was developed by what was then maybe the very best game developer of its time: Blizzard North (and published by Blizzard in 2000).
The overall dark tone and punishing gameplay felt more immersive and "hardcore" than later entries, if you read up on the feedback on Diablo forums. It was grittier and tougher. It also allowed for more variety in terms of playstyles, adding a lot to replayability value.
I can't speak for all fans, obviously. I also never played the fourth part that was released in 2023.
What do you think? Diablo II being the truest to its RPG roots, and the one with the best lore and gameplay?
