Virginia just took a major step forward by passing a new law that expands the ability of local communities to use Ranked Choice Voting in their elections. That’s exactly the kind of progress we’re fighting for here in Michigan. Five Michigan cities have already voted to use Ranked Choice Voting. The people have spoken. Now it’s time to let those communities move forward. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, we need to follow the growing list of states proving that voters deserve more voice, more choice, and majority-supported winners. Michigan should be next. Ranked Choice Voting is an easy upgrade to our current voting system that allows you to rank as many or as few candidates as you want in order of your preference. Have you ever gone to the voting booth and wanted to cast your vote for someone but ended up voting for someone else because you didn’t think your favorite candidate had enough support to actually win? That worry goes away with Ranked Choice Voting. With Ranked Choice Voting you’re able to vote for the candidate you believe truly aligns with your values regardless of whether or not they’re a long shot candidate. Here’s how it works: If a candidate gets a majority of first choices, 50% +1, they win. If not, the candidate with the fewest first choice votes is eliminated. Voters who ranked that candidate as their #1 then have their second preference counted. These steps repeat until a candidate passes that 50% threshold, ensuring that every winner under a Ranked Choice Voting system has the support of - and represents - the majority of voters. Ranking our candidates allows us to vote our hopes, not our fears. Ranked Choice Voting works, and is used across the country in various cities and states, as well as by political parties in primaries. The Oscars use Ranked Choice Voting to pick who gets to go home with those coveted golden trophies. We rank our preferences every day. Ever had to pick pizza toppings with a group of friends or for a class pizza party? Ever had to decide which flavor of ice cream you were going to pick in case they were out of your favorite? What about picking a shirt that’s offered in different colors? Have you ever ranked your favorite animals, colors, or tv shows? Books or movies? Your top five musicians? Ranking is all around us. We all deserve a better system. One that allows us to rank our preferences and give our votes more power. We the people deserve more voice and more choice in our democracy. @America04796024 Ranked Choice Voting gives voters more voice and more choice. Our current system disenfranchises voters by forcing them to vote strategically instead of who they want to. It forces candidates to drop out of elections because they might be a spoiler.

We voted and we thought we were done... still waiting on first-ballot results, and it’s already looking like there will be a runoff. Do you want to improve democracy? Are you tired of candidates you can’t get behind? Do you wish you could hold politicians more accountable? Something has to change. Ranked Choice Voting is one of the real, concrete ways we can make Michigan politics calmer, kinder, and more representative! Don’t know what Ranked Choice Voting is? How RCV Works: 🗳️ You get to rank your candidates in order of preference: 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ (e.g.: 1. Love this candidate, 2. Like this one too, but not as much as #1, 3. This person’s okay too, and so on or you can stop here if you really don't like anyone else.) 🗳️ If your #1 choice doesn’t have enough votes to win, then your vote still counts for your 2nd pick, and so on, until a candidate has over 50% of voters support.
