When I look at the numbers today, over 1.1 million canisters already deployed and DeFi TVL still sitting at just $11.04 million, I see incredible technical momentum paired with economic traction that is still very early. Raising the cost of the core differentiator of ICP before most builders have found sustainable product-market fit feels like putting the cart before the horse. This brings me straight back to the moment AWS rewrote the rules of the cloud. Back in 2006 they launched S3 at an eye-wateringly low $0.15 per GB per month and EC2 with radically cheaper pay-as-you-go pricing than running your own servers. They didn’t start by charging a premium for “enterprise security”; they removed every possible price barrier so thousands of developers and startups could experiment freely. Only after the usage flywheel was spinning did they gradually optimize the economics. That deliberate accessibility is exactly why AWS became the default. Maybe the smarter path here is to accelerate the tiered/SEV subnets the whitepaper itself suggests (7-node subnets that keep cycle costs stable for most use-cases), fast-track the cheap blob storage, and let real usage data + the adaptive NNS guide any further price adjustments once adoption is actually accelerating.
